Lens index, plainly explained

When to pick standard, when to pick high-index.

Lens indexBest for RxThicknessWeightCost
1.50 (CR-39)Up to ±3.00 DStandardHeaviestIncluded
1.59 (Polycarbonate)±3.00 to ±5.00 D20% thinnerLighter+$30
1.67 (High-index)±5.00 to ±8.00 D40% thinnerLightest+$60
1.74 (Ultra high-index)Above ±8.00 D50% thinnerLightest+$135

If your prescription is moderate (under ±3 D), the standard 1.50 lens is the right answer 90% of the time. Higher index only matters when the lens would otherwise look thick from the side.

FAQ

Lens questions, answered.

What's included for free?

Every frame ships with: standard 1.50 single-vision lenses, anti-scratch coating, UV protection, and a hard case + microfiber. No upcharges.

What's the difference between AR and blue-light?

Anti-reflective (AR) eliminates reflections you see from the outside (and that show up on Zoom). Blue-light filtering reduces the high-energy visible light from screens that hits your eyes. Most buyers add both — they target different problems.

Do progressive lenses take longer to ship?

About 2 days longer — total turnaround is 9 days vs 7 for single vision. Free-form progressives are surfaced one by one at our Pittsburgh lab.

What's the 30-day swap promise?

If your new lenses give you headaches, dizziness, or simply don't feel right, we'll re-cut them within 30 days at no charge. Most adaptation issues resolve in 5–7 days, but if not, we re-make.

Can I buy lenses without a frame?

Not currently — we cut and fit lenses to our own frames. If you want to put our lenses in another frame, we recommend visiting an in-person lab.
