— Five quiet outings

What to do, when you're staying.

We partner with five local guides we've known for at least a decade. Each experience caps at six guests, runs whatever the weather, and is bookable at the front desk by 7pm the day before.

— 01 · Sea kayak

Morning paddle, Glass Beach.

— With Theo Linn, since 2014

Theo's been guiding the cove since the sea-glass economy collapsed and the bay turned into a quiet wildlife refuge. The morning paddle launches at 7:30, lasts about ninety minutes, and almost always sees a harbor seal — sometimes thirty.

Sit-on-top kayaks. No prior experience needed. Wetsuits and dry-bags included. We provide a thermos of coffee and a slice of yesterday's milk bread.

— 02 · Foraging walk

The bluff, with Wei Tanaka.

— With Wei Tanaka, since 2018

Wei is a third-generation forager, an ethnobotanist, and the only person on the coast who can tell you what every plant on the bluff is good for, mostly without looking. The walk runs four miles at a slow pace and ends with a short tasting back at the kitchen.

What you'll find depends on the season — usually wild miner's lettuce, sea palm, sorrel, and rosehips. Sturdy shoes essential. Best for guests staying two nights or more.

— 03 · Oyster afternoon

Hog Island, with the boats.

— With Marisol Estrada, since 2020

An afternoon at the bay with Marisol — a former Hog Island oysterman who now runs her own bag-to-table tasting operation in a barn forty minutes south. Twelve oysters, three styles, two glasses of bay-grown wine.

We provide the drive there and back. Marisol provides the rest. The route is one of the prettiest stretches of Highway One in California, and the only experience we run that isn't on the bluff.

— 04 · Bird watching

Dawn watch, the headlands.

— With Audre Pell, since 2016

Audre is the local Audubon chapter's most patient member, and the only guide we've ever worked with who'll wake up at 4:45 in the morning. The dawn walk runs March through October and frequently sees the resident pair of peregrines.

Coffee provided. Binoculars provided (or bring your own). Loose ankle preferred over tight schedule.

— 05 · Cold plunge

Sauna, sea, sauna again.

— With the Your Business team, year-round

Our most popular experience runs out of the cypress lawn behind the main building. Wood-fired sauna, three rounds of sixty seconds in the Pacific (don't worry, we go with you), warm towel, hot tea. Best done after dinner.

Bring a swimsuit. We provide the towel, the tea, and the courage. Available year-round; the cold-plunge water hovers around 55°F summer, 49°F winter.
