The first version of Your Business ran on a Friday afternoon in November 2022, on a borrowed Macbook Air, in a coworking space above a bakery in Lisbon. It was supposed to be a side project — an excuse to learn Rust during a sabbatical between two startup jobs.
Three years later, it's the writing app for 24,000 essayists, founders, journalists, and students. We've raised one round of funding (Series A, March 2025) on the condition that we stay small, ship slowly, and never run an ad.
Why we built it
We watched the wave of "AI writing tools" land in 2023 and felt vaguely bad about most of them. Not because they were dishonest — most were pleasant — but because they treated writing as a problem to solve, instead of a thing to do.
The good ones replaced your sentences with better-sounding ones. The bad ones replaced your sentences with longer ones. Both of them treated the writer as the bottleneck.
"The point of a writing tool isn't to produce more words. It's to make you want to come back and write more often."
Your Business's design constraint, from the first commit, is that using it should feel like writing — not editing, not orchestrating, not prompting. The cursor should land, the chrome should fade, and the AI should stay out of the way until you ask.
What we promise
We will never train a model on customer drafts. We will never run an ad on this site. We will publish a real changelog every other Tuesday. We will keep the free tier free, forever. If we ever break any of these, we'll write you a long letter explaining why.
