We started Your Business in 2019 with a single ceramic mug, an empty room in a Portland warehouse, and the suspicion that home goods didn't have to come and go in season cycles.
Genevieve, our founder, was running a small ceramics studio in Devon when she realized that the bowls she was selling at the local market were ending up — improbably — in the homes of people in Portland, Oslo, and Tokyo. She'd ship them in newspaper, pay the duty, and hope.
The bet was simple: if a small catalog of objects, slowly assembled and honestly described, could find its way to those homes one mug at a time, then a small online shop could do the same thing at slightly more practical scale.
Six years later we work with twenty-six independent makers across nine countries. Our catalog has grown to 126 pieces. The warehouse is still in Portland, the bowls still come from Devon, and Genevieve still answers about half of the customer service emails.
What's changed: we now release four small seasonal updates a year instead of two; we've added linen and stone to the original ceramic-only catalog; and we ship carbon-neutrally on every order, which we couldn't afford to do until 2023.
At least 70% of every piece is shaped, sewn, or finished by a human. We will say so explicitly when machinery does the rest.
We use every piece in our own homes for sixty days before listing it. If it pills, chips, or fades on us, it doesn't make the catalog.
Every product page lists the maker, the country, the materials, and the manufacturing method. No vague "Designed in" copy.
One short letter every Friday — what's new, what's almost gone, and a peek inside the rooms our makers are working from.
